Wednesday Dates
Fall 2008 dates have been planned, and will be announced as soon as the facility confirms them.

On Wednesday evenings, NFC hosts an evening of open fencing with private lessons available. While epee is the majority, all weapons are very much welcome and encouraged! Lessons in all weapons are available as well.

Times: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Cost: $30/month (a "month" consists of 4 announced evenings, those Wednesdays not available are not counted against the "month"). Additional family members are $5/month each. Two free private lessons (see "Lesson Info") for each household, per month. Payment methods are currently limited to cash or check, please. Checks should be made out to "Will Mego" for the time being. Credit cards and longer periods of membership will be available next season. Payment is due at your first attendance of each period. All fencers are welcome, including other USFA clubs, as this is an open fencing night, not a class.

Where: Scullen Middle School, 2815 Mistflower Lane, Naperville, IL 60564 (near 103rd and Rt. 59)
Room: Commons area of the school. Enter using Door #1, located on the north side of the school. Take the first hallway on the left, our room is the first on the right.

Format: Open fencing, with individual lessons available. You're welcome to drill or fence in any accepted format.

Lesson Info: Each membership has two free lessons available. Each lesson is between 15-30 minutes, although shorter, less intense lessons of 5-15 minutes are available at request. In each lesson, the student will be led through a sequence of actions ranging in intensity and skill levels. Each lesson is based upon the skills of the student, and the skills taught will be tailored to the unique needs of each fencer. Lessons must generally be arranged in advance if you wish to ensure receiving one on a specific evening or at a specific time, and an online lesson sign up sheet is being considered. Students will need the minimum equipment for dry (non-electric) fencing to take a lesson, unless an equipment loan has been arranged in advance. If desired, a member can purchase additional lessons, $25/full lesson, $15/short lesson.

NFC policies you should probably know:
  • A registration form AND waiver MUST be signed BEFORE you are allowed to fence. Minors MUST have a parent or guardian sign the waiver before the fencer will be allowed to participate. No exceptions, sorry.
  • All safety rules in effect, this means NO SANDALS, NO SHORTS! You must wear clothing which covers the legs. This can be anything from regulation fencing knickers/breeches, to warmups, track pants, even jeans (not recommended, but allowed). Shoes must be non-marking, and must cover the entire foot. Gloves MUST be worn. If you show up in shorts, sandals, no glove, etc..you might very well NOT be allowed to participate!
  • Sabre fencers are allowed some license with pants, however....but we reserve the right to make comments about their legs until covered!
  • Wednesday practices are not a replacement for group practices, such as our programs on Monday in Downer's Grove, or on Thursdays in Glen Ellyn. Those are structured practice with footwork, drilling, and heavy coaching feedback. Wednesdays is open fencing, with optional private lessons available.
  • If you do NOT know how to fence yet, this is NOT a beginning class. I strongly recommend taking one of our available beginner classes or beginning fencer friendly programs first, as there will not be the level of structure you'd need to learn to fence.
  • You must have a minimum of equipment unless you've worked something out with us beforehand, so don't expect to show up unexpectedly, without a stitch of equipment to your name, and expect to find anything available. Our structured group practices provide all equipment, this doesn't.
  • You must be able to participate safely. Those fencers who can't take safely without a lot of supervision will not be welcome. This is an open practice, not a children's fencing class. We offer those quite often, but this isn't it!
  • All weapons are welcome. Yes, at the moment, Epee is 90% of what's going to be there, but I'm STRONGLY hoping to balance all three weapons at these new Wednesday practices. I hope you'll take part in helping us do this, and I hope we can have a strong and plentiful group of both Foil and Sabre fencers within a few months!
  • Dry fencing is welcome, although you can expect most of the fencers will want to fence electric, so you should PROBABLY have electric equipment, just to insure you'll have somebody to fence with!
  • NFC reserves the right to forbid participation without warning to a fencer due to unsafe, abusive, or disruptive behavior.
  • Payment for the month is due at the beginning of that period. You're free to join whenever you like. Refunds will not be available for any reason other than unexpected cancellation of practices, or additionally at the discretion of NFC. For the time being, checks should be made out to "Will Mego".
